The best food in the city is on the pavement. Somebody has to show you which stall.
Which Hanoi walk stops at the bun cha everybody queues for. What a Naples fry shop crawl costs. Whether a motorbike night tour in Saigon beats going on foot. Reviews of the street food tours you can actually book.
Four cities where the eating is the reason to go.
The walks and rides that more travellers book than anything else on this site. What each costs, and what happens on it.
01Dubai, first nightOld Town, Creek, Museums, Souks, & Street Food TourCreek crossing by abra, then the spice and gold lanes with a plate at every other doorway. The easiest first evening in the Gulf.
02Saigon, on the backHo Chi Minh City Street Food Tour & Sightseeing By MotorbikeYou ride pillion, the driver parks at a stall, you eat, you get back on. Four districts in one evening, none of them the tourist ones.
03Naples, standing upStreet Food Walking Tour with Local GuideFried pizza, a paper cone of crocche, taralli from the cart by the water. Naples eats on its feet and this walk keeps up.
04Hanoi, Old QuarterStreet Food Tour with Train Street & Hidden AlleywaysTrain Street and the alley kitchens behind it, ending on the plastic stools where the bun cha comes out charred.
Six countries that feed you better on the street than at the table.
A Hanoi alley at seven in the morning, a Palermo fry counter at midnight, the Marrakech square once the smoke goes up, Bangkok under strip lights. Six eating countries, and the tours that get you fed in each.
Vietnam: on foot, on the back of a bike, or after dark.
One country, three completely different evenings. Walking suits the Hanoi Old Quarter, where the good kitchens are thirty seconds apart. Saigon is spread out, so you ride. And half of what is worth eating only comes out once the heat drops.
The street food tours travellers take most.

The stalls that only exist between six and midnight.
Night markets are their own meal. The griddles come out at dusk, the queues form by eight, and the best of it is gone before eleven. These are the after-dark walks worth staying up for.
What a street food tour costs, from a $15 alley walk up.
Every tour on the site, grouped by the per-head price. Street food is the cheapest good meal in most of these cities, and the tours mostly follow.
Italy does street food standing at a counter, twice a day.
Palermo fries chickpea flour and calls it panelle. Naples folds a pizza and hands it over in paper. Venice lines a bar with cicchetti at six. None of it is a sit-down meal and all of it is the best thing you will eat that day.
All the Italian counter crawls →Three ways of eating you cannot copy at home.
Anyone can book a restaurant. Riding pillion between four Saigon kitchens, eating a Michelin-listed bowl at a hawker centre, or walking a medina until the smoke tells you where to stop are not on any menu.

Eating from the back of a bike
A driver picks you up, you sit behind, and the tour is the ride between stalls. It works because Saigon food is scattered across districts nobody walks between, and because a pillion seat gets you into alleys a minibus cannot enter. Helmets and rain ponchos come with it. You will smell of charcoal afterwards.

Michelin, served on a paper plate
The guide started listing hawker stalls and roadside kitchens, and a handful now hold a star or a Bib Gourmand while still charging four dollars a bowl. The queues doubled overnight. A guide is worth it here mostly for knowing which lines move and which stalls sell out by one.

Walking a quarter until it feeds you
Old quarters were built before street signs, which is exactly why they still cook this way: one lane for grilled meat, one for bread, one for sweets. In Marrakech the square only becomes a food court after sunset. In Hanoi the same thirty-six streets have carried the same thirty-six trades for six hundred years.

In India the tuk-tuk is part of the meal.
Old Delhi and Agra run their food walks the same way: a driver, a spice market, chaat from a cart that has been at the same corner for decades, and a jalebi at the end. It is the cheapest eating on the site and the busiest half-mile in any of these cities.

Turn up hungry, carry small notes, say what you cannot eat.
A street food tour is a full meal, usually six to twelve stops, and almost every guide will tell you the same three things. Skip lunch. Bring cash in small notes, because a cart does not take cards. And flag anything you cannot eat when you book, not on the pavement: vegetarian is easy in India and Vietnam, harder in Palermo, and a stall cannot re-cook a wok that has done shrimp all evening.
Four food tours that are gone by the time you arrive.
Most of this can be arranged the morning of. These cannot. Small groups cap at eight or ten, the good guides run one sitting a night, and a stall that sells out at nine does not restock for you.
- 01Small Group: Michelin and Local Hawker Food Tour with 9 tastingsMichelin-listed hawker stalls sell out hours before they close, so these tours run to one early sitting and cap the group.
- 02Ho Chi Minh City Street Food Tour & Sightseeing By MotorbikeOne rider per guest, so the group size is the number of bikes the operator owns that night.
- 03Street Food Tour with Train Street & Hidden AlleywaysTrain Street runs to the railway timetable, not yours, and the cafes clear the track before each service.
- 04Night Market Food Tour with Local GuideThe griddles come on at dusk and the best stalls are stripped by eleven, so evening slots fill first.
